My Life During Pre-sessional School!

Hi everyone~It's me again~!! Claire
Some people were asking me a lot about my experience during the pre-sessional school (English Language Teaching Centre).
So, now I am going to show you some photos and share my experience with you!

First of all, studying in the pre-sessional class will not only help you improve your English (for passing the final exam in order to get your unconditional offer)
but also helps you to settle into the new environment more easily.
For example, the teachers not only teach you how to pass the exam, they also teach you how to write a project and use academic language, as well as how to use the library and online system, presentation skills and how to make your own notes from the lectures
All the skills I mentioned above can help you have a easier life when you join the real master course.

See, I was working with a cup of coffee in the library for my first English project!!!

By starting your life in the UK a little bit earlier you also benefit from finding out about all the activities the university offers.  You can learn how to make a cup of coffee with fresh beans and do some coffee art - trust me this is really my fist time at a shot!

Spring is Coming!!!

Hi everybody

I know a lot of people are preparing (struggling) for IELTS exam and worrying about many things about coming to UK. I know this because I worry about my assignment and dissertation as well.

But if you find this happening when you're here, you just have t stop worrying and have a little walk on the street.

You can see many, many beautiful flowers around the street.

I wanted to share some photos to show you how you can feel and enjoy beautiful spring time!!!!

Winter is gone!!! Let's enjoy the spring time!!!!!

Relax, and everything will be fine : )

My Investment in the University

Hi, I am Claire,

Recently I have been very busy with my idea's for my dissertation. It's not easy when you are trying to make the general idea more specific. But I am doing my best on it.

Today, I am going to tell you about my investment in the University.
Although the University is mainly about teaching you how to get your knowledge in an academic way; the University of Sheffield also offers a lot of help to make you a better connection to the real business world.

First, on the University section. They have a Career Service to advise students who needs any help or advice on their career choices and options.
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers

If you are in the management school, like me~
You can just go to the career service in the management school!!
Just go into the office, and they will help you with your enquiries and make an appointment for you to see the professional adviser.

As for my course (Creative and Cultural Industries Management.)
We have several field trips during the semesters.

My Favorite Libraries!

Hi everyone, today I am going to talk about my favorite library in the University of Sheffield.

There are four libraries in the University.

I am going to share with you information about my favorite one and the one which most students go.

First! My favorite one! Western Bank Library.

You have to noticed that this library is not open 24 hours!

The whole space is for students to study silently, so remember to stay quiet when you come here.

My favorite part for this library is the view you can have when you look outside the window!

Just feel like you are sitting in the park. And you can also enjoy the sunshine when there is a sunny day. Therefore, you can have a really good mood when you study here. It make you work more efficiently!!

The one which most students like to go!! Information commons!!

One of the reason that it is so popular is bacause it opens for 24 hours!!! So you can come here and study all day, or even all night !!!

Eat in Sheffield :)

Some people may worry about what kind of food they can eat as their daily meal when they are not in their home country.

So, today I want to share some pictures with you about my life in Sheffield.

Firstly! If you study in UK. You must try some traditional English food!!!

Fish and Chips:

Full English breakfast!! Makes you feel energetic all day long!

 Afternoon tea party:

Want to know what kind of cuisine you can have in restaurant in Sheffield?

Accommodation !!!

Hi everyone,

Today I want to tell you something very important. When you start thinking about studying in another country, accommodation must be a big issue for you all. I know it was for me! So here's some general information about accommodation from my personal experience : )

Firstly, many students want to apply for the the school accommodation. Our University offer lots of accommodation for students here and you can see some information on the website and apply one for your own. (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation)

Basically, living in the student accommodation is a good choice for the students who study here for the first year. Because the University offer a lot of information and help for the new students and international students are guaranteed accommodation in the university for the first year.  It is very safe and secure and there are always have guards in the accommodation 24 hours. Although Sheffield is already one of the safest city in UK, You will still feel safer when there are guards around the place you live. Especially for girls.

And this is the accommodation I live right now.

Finally, some pictures of my own experience

This is what the room looked like when I arrived on the first day.

And this is after I set everything up.

My Major for the Master : )

Hi, I am Claire, today I want to introduce my Masters course to you. I am studying for a  Msc in Creative and Cultural Industries Management in the management school of University of Sheffield. And I think my major is the most special course in the management school. :P Because the course is not only teach us the business study and strategy, but also combine the cultural phenomenon and theory, such as Cultural marketing. It doesn’t just focus on a single area. I believe this course at the University of Sheffield can help me to get into my career quicker than other courses and is more connective to the practical aspect which I am interested in.

The most enjoyable thing about studying my subject at the University of Sheffield is that we have a field trip during the course period. The teachers took us to one of the local theatres in Sheffield and the local creative cultural industries workshop to help us experience the real thing outside reading and lectures. In addition, they also invite the managers who currently work in the cultural organization to give us some lecture in order to teach us some practical skills. Our assignments are mainly based on the case study of a real organization which helps us become more familiar of how organizations work in practice

The most valuable aspects of my course are that our teachers are not only good at academic teaching, but also have great experience from the society. Some of them even have the O.B.E. medal from The Queen of the United Kingdom. Therefore, the teaching from those amazing people is absolutely the most valuable thing of my course.

The photo of the O.B.E. medal from the teacher!!

If you want to know more, see the link below. (The photo we took in the field trip is on the website!!)

Location - Sheffield as a City

Having been in Sheffield since September 2009, it is becoming more of a second home rather than just a place where I attend University. It is a place I hold dear to my heart and I would like to share with you why I think it's the best place for you to spend your university times and beyond.

Sheffield is a city located in South Yorkshire, England. Even though it is the third/fourth largest English cities by population, it feels more like a small town to me. However, that is not to say it doesn't have a good range of shops and facilities for its residents. On the contrary, I think it exemplifies the best integration of small town/close-knit community living with urban city life.

Sheffield is located conveniently within easy access to other major cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London. London is 2 hours train ride away while the other 3 cities can be reached within one hour.

The beautiful Peak District is just 5 miles away from Sheffield city centre and is one of my favourite places to spend some quality time relaxing, either through walking or cycling.

Derwent Valley

Tackling the slope with ease, not!
Cycling at Derwent Valley
Posing for the camera, on a bike, with the river as the background. meh.

Important thing at uni: make good friends who are willing to move rock (literally) for your pleasure :)

Wildlife at the Peaks

The City itself is really compact and everything is within walking distance or a short bus journey away. Most of the university buildings are close to student's halls/accommodation so most of the students walk to uni, which is a really healthy way of living!

The Arts Tower - opened in 1966 it is still the tallest education building in the UK, and in my role as a student ambassador also where I work.

Western Bank on a beautiful Day (view from the 6th floor of the Information Commons)

Sheffield also has its own tram network which provides access to major locations across the city, for e.g. the Sheffield Cathedral, University, City Centre and Meadowhall.
Tram

Meadowhall is an indoor shopping centre that is located about 20 minutes away from the city centre by Tram. It is the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire and the eighth largest in the whole of UK! There are close to 300 shops at Meadowhall and it is really a great place to shop and chill out. There's also a cinema at the shopping centre too!

24 hours Tesco

Sheffield also offers a good range of clubs, theatres and museums for its residents, for example, the Crucible. The Crucible theatre is famous for hosting the annual World Snooker Championship. An interesting thing to note is that the Sports Psychologist credited with helping Ronnie O'Sullivan to overcome the shackles of depression to go back to winning ways, is Dr Steve Peters, who is also a lecturer at Sheffield Medical School!

Sheffield- My City :)

Hi everyone, I thought you might like to hear more about Sheffield as a city, so I have shared some of my photographs taken here.

If you want to get around the city but don't want to walk by foot too much, there's always public transportation for you to choose. For example the tram! (This is one of my favourite was to travel because I am quite lazy:P)

The tram comes nearly every ten minutes during the week, and twenty minutes at the weekend.
It is also very convenient if you want to go to the biggest shopping mall in Sheffield-Meadowhall shopping center!!!

The city center is also a place full of surprises.....usually it looked like this.

World Food Festival!

Hi everyone It's Claire here!

It's been a long time from the last blog, because I was having my Christmas and New year vacation.  It was really great and I wish you all have a happy new year.
I wanted to write to you about some of the activities hosted by the Student Union, and how they work together with some of the National student societies.
The students in University of Sheffield come from all over the world. One of the best ways to communicate and to understand different cultures is through food!!!!!
I really like trying new food :P and I wanted to share some photographs from a recent event held by the students union - The World Food Festival!!

The World Food Festival held in the Octagon Centre. Looks like a big party!!

There were sooooo many different National societies there, and lots of special food . It's like a little Food Unite Nation~: ))

Food for thought!!! I hope you have already finished your meal, because this will leave you feeling hungry after seeing this photos :P

Sorry I don't remember all of the food's name , because I was sooo busy eating them!!!!:P

And don't think that eating the food was the only thing you can do there!! There were also some performances from our student societies including traditional dancing :))

See! is it great!! Come to University of Sheffield and experience it by youself:P
